Drilling & Shoring

Cottle’s Asphalt Maintenance Inc.

No Project Too Big or Too Small!

Cottle’s Asphalt Maintenance Inc. (CAM) provides comprehensive drilling and earth shoring services throughout our Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia service areas, with support available for large-scale projects nationwide. From conventional drilling to powerful “down-the-hole” hammer drilling services up to 30” diameter, we can expedite any project with maximum efficiency – even through extremely hard solids such as granite and quartz. Cottle’s also installs complete shoring systems for many types of projects with various methods including H-Pile, sheeting, slide rail, and trench box service.

Drilling

Conventional Drilling

At CAM, our ability to adapt and solve our customers’ most challenging drilling projects is key to helping you achieve your goals. No matter the scale or complexity level, we deliver innovative, savvy solutions that work. From routine drilling to challenges involving diverse geologies, we offer a full range of drilling services and stand ready to assist with any construction project.

“Down the Hole” Hammer Drilling

Cottle’s Asphalt Maintenance Inc. was one of the first drilling contractors in the state to obtain a “down-the-hole” hammer drill. This is not an auger, but an EXTREMELY powerful hardened drill. With this equipment, our crews can effectively burrow through some of the hardest minerals, rocks, and solid bedrock, including quartz and granite. If you’ve been struggling, contact us immediately. While your team might take three weeks or more in an attempt to tunnel through the toughest substrates and barely notice a difference, we can, for example, typically drill out a 30” diameter hole straight through eight feet of solid bedrock and mineral veins in just 1.5 days!

Shoring

Complete Earth Shoring Systems

Cottle’s Asphalt Maintenance Inc. supports deep excavation projects by helping work crews avoid construction mishaps with a full range of custom earth shoring systems. As professional shoring contractors, we have some of the best shoring engineers, tools, and equipment to build sturdy structures that help resist earth movement. Some of the options we provide include those listed below.

Shoring at bridge site

H-Pile Shoring (Soldier Pile Walls)

Shoring walls are constructed of H-Beams and pre-cast concrete panels. By pre-drilling, vibrating, or driving the steel beams into the earth, we create a strong foundation and complete the wall with concrete-formed panels.

Sheeting (Sheet Piles)

Sheet piles are installed similarly to H-piles by driving U or Z steel sections into the earth with a Vibro-hammer. In some cases, we may weld the steel to help ensure shoring integrity in deeper applications. For excavation applications alongside waterways and bodies of water, we install sheet piles to help isolate the excavation from adjacent water intrusion.

Slide Rail

In contrast to tight-driven sheeting and “build-in-place” shoring, Slide Rail pit shoring enables efficient installation with a “dig and push” method to help shore up open trench excavations at risk of trench collapse and cave-in. This system may be ideal for maximum versatility when crossing unknown underground obstacles and utility crossings, and helping to secure adjacent personnel and structures.

Trench Box Service (Trench Shields)

Although trench boxes (also known as Tap Boxes, Manhole Boxes, and Sewer Boxes) are not designed to improve structural strength or help prevent collapse, trench shields can help increase the safety (and therefore, productivity) of workers in and near foundation excavations. Trench boxes offer utility while digging, drilling, working on underground wiring, utility, pipe installation and repair, and similar excavation projects. We construct the box with two steel or aluminum shields to line the trench wall and then brace it with perpendicular beams. These are welded in place for stability.
